Take Action: Keeping QLDers Safe From Natural Disasters

Across Queensland Regional Conservation Groups and QCC are campaigning for better planning for Natural Disasters. Research released by the Climate Council, State of Queensland: Ground Zero shows that Queensland is Australia’s most disaster prone state, with climate change fuelling more intense bushfires, floods, cyclones, storms and heatwaves. Decades of inaction on climate change means that Queensland communities are both facing poor planning and protection from the natural disasters, whilst governments fail to enact sufficient measures to stop the key cause: climate damaging emissions.

CAFNEC continues to campaign for greater action on climate change, but we also know that communities need help now. That’s why we have teamed up with Regional Conservation Groups across Queensland to call for all sides of politics to commit to greater protection of Queenslanders. As the Queensland State election approaches, we have a critical window to push for real action to protect Queenslanders and help us adapt. We need to secure bipartisan commitment to two key priorities:

1. A business case for QHeat2050 to address the increasing heat risks.

2. Resources to improve mapping that integrates riverine flooding, coastal hazards, and nature-based solutions, alongside better science for QCoast2100.

Summer 2023 was devastating for Far North Queensland communities. Over the last 6 months CAFNEC has been working with flood impacted communities to understand the impacts of the floods associated with Tropical Cyclone Jasper and what they think would have helped better prepare and protect them from the natural disaster.
