Cairns and Far North residents turned out in force to the CAFNEC Marine Response Team Rally for the Reef to oppose dredging and support reef protection.

Thousands turned out against dredging for our Save The Reef – Protect Our Inlet rally, a full house attended our community forum on dredging, hundreds of you submitted your concerns regarding the draft EIS… The Government listened and ruled out funding new dredging in Cairns. BUT WE NEED YOU TO TAKE ONE MORE STEP.

No mega-port for Cairns – e-petition now available. Let your voice be heard and sign the parliamentary petition against environmentally damaging, unnecessary and uneconomic new dredging in Cairns and the push to turn Cairns into a big-dredging industrial style port putting our lifestyle and tourism industry at risk. The case for ‘priority port’ status does not add up, Cairns is not and never should be a large bulk commodity port like Gladstone or Townsville. This would send the wrong message to potential tourism visitors, and could have negative impacts on the economy. Nobody wants to hold back the economic future of Cairns, but new dredging threatens to do just that and is not necessary for our industries such as tourism, sugar export and defence to continue.

A well funded campaign that seems to be backed by a few vested interests has been lobbying hard to convince the Government to ignore commitments to UNESCO and the people of Queensland to limit new dredging in waters adjoining the Great Barrier Reef. The Government is sticking to their promises so far, but they need to hear from the community, not just vested interests.

It is time to have your voice heard, please sign and share this e-petition which is open to all Queensland residents.
