Volunteers needed: Bike Tour 2017!

Preparations for CAFNEC’s major annual fundraiser, The Far North Wilderness Bike Tour have begun for 2017. The bike tour is an eight day adventure into the wilderness of Far North Queensland traversing national parks, private property and little known creeks and camping spots.  It is fully catered for and supported ride which is now in its sixteenth successful year.

The bike tour runs from 23rd – 30th September and we need dedicated volunteers to get the ride on the road. 

We’re seeking volunteers for the following teams:

1. Catering on tour
2. Catering off tour
3. Lunch
4. Morning and arvo tea
5. Camp set-up
6. Rider support including a bike mechanic
7. Bike trailer transport
8. Bar operations

The bike tour is the main fundraiser for the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre and contributes to a major and irreplaceable part of our income. It is true that without this amazing volunteer run event we could not continue our work.

This year’s ride is shaping up to be the most exciting bike tour event yet!  We have been receiving great responses from both riders and sponsors. This year’s tour includes the best campsites and routes from previous years as well as a new campsite in Dinden National Park.  We have also added to the tour a ride to Etty Bay before heading to our first campsite at Mena Creek.

We will also be spending 2 days at the bush heritage listed Yourka Station, one of Australia’s 12 biodiversity hotspots.  You will have the option of camping alongside beautiful lagoons and enjoy watching the amazing variety of birds.  While at Yourka, take the opportunity to ride to Herbert River Gorge and swim in the spectacular pools above the falls and witness inspirational views.
