We know that your stories and your community voices are important. Politicians need to know that this is a vote defining issue and that we want a Green Blue Recovery. It’s as simple as writing a letter but for impact we need more than just a few people. So we are asking you to host ‘Get Togethers for the Green and Blues’

We want you to get together with friends and family and write letters together, so your action is multiplied!

What is a Get Together?

A Get Together is a simple and powerful – helping people discuss what really matters in a comfortable environment. Hosts (who are self-selecting) invite small groups to have conversations based on focused themes. Participants might be friends, neighbours, family, workmates or people known from community networks. The conversations are shaped around an issue of interest, in this case the Green & Blue Stimulus Package.

Hosts bring together small groups of up to 10 others, but can be fewer. These might be friends, neighbours, family, workmates, or people they know from community networks. Invitations are more formal than verbal, or simply inviting people on Social Media. They are specific and targeted to people who hosts think will be interested. Attendees meet around the kitchen table, their workplace, or wherever is easiest for them. The only proviso is the place needs to be quiet enough for everyone to be heard easily and feel comfortable in the space.

The hosts facilitate a conversation about the issue and then ensure that their participants’ ideas and thoughts are heard and collated by the hosts and shared with CAFNEC (with permission), so CAFNEC can hear from the community conversations. After discussing the issue, the hosts will ask their attendees to move their passion to action, and take a step to contribute to the solution. In our case, writing a letter to our Premier, Deputy Premier and Treasurer.

The Queensland State Election is fast approaching!

We are at a pivotal point here in Tropical North Queensland. As the pandemic continues we are seeing the increasing impacts of climate change our natural environments and our communities are suffering. High unemployment rates, economic recession and tourism downturn is exacerbated by the climate impacts we are facing. In recent years, we have experienced our homes inundated with flood waters, storm surges ravaging our coast, widespread coral bleaching, catastrophic heatwaves and increased fires, wet seasons with no rain, and damaging cyclones.

But found within the Green and Blue Economic Stimulus Package, our region has the answers and the opportunity to be better prepared and create a brighter future. By employing more people in land and sea management now, and creating long-term jobs to protect our World Heritage Areas we will a) increase our resilience to climate change, and b) rapidly increase and sustain the flow of money directly into our economy. As well as, igniting innovation and diversification to our industry that will transition our region to be the Smart Green Capital of Australia.

We have the answer but we need to gain the support from governments, philanthropy, industry, and our community.

Come along to discover opportunities to take action with like-minded people, and make sure our economic recovery is not ‘business as usual’. Find out how you can make sure your voice is heard. We need our Far North Qld community to turn up, turn out and get LOUD – to make sure our region is heard this election. We need to be a strong collective voice as stewards of two World Heritage Areas. We need you talking and writing to our decision makers, community members, family and friends.

This is an opportunity to burst out of the ‘boom and bust’ cycles that hamper Tropical North Queensland, and rebuild our economy so that it is more resilient to future economic shocks.

World Heritage Areas – $11 billion
Tourism – $3.5 billion
Agriculture – $1.62 billion

Dear Honourable Members Enoch, Frydenberg, Ley and Dick I’m writing to you to express my strong support for the Tropical North Queensland Green and Blue Economic Stimulus Package. Our Federal and State governments have worked collaboratively to help our nation face the Covid-19 pandemic with strength. Today I am addressing you together to ask you to ensure that your collaborative work continues into the recovery period. As someone who lives in Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) I have seen the impacts of Covid-19 first hand. Our region is doing it tough, our tourism is suffering, our businesses are closing and we are expected to have some of the highest unemployment rates in the country and for the longest duration. On top of the challenges of Covid-19, our region is also facing serious threats to the World Heritage environments which we all love and our economy relies on. Coral bleaching, bushfires and cyclones present a significant ongoing risk to the Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef as well as the industries, communities and ecosystem services provided by these natural systems. Even our Wet Tropics rainforest, the world’s oldest rainforest, is now at risk of bushfires with TNQ experiencing one of the driest wet seasons on record in 2019/20. The TNQ Green and Blue Economic Stimulus Package, if supported as part of our state’s COVID-19 recovery plans, would directly create 1500 jobs in TNQ over 3 years, as a part of 2 key components; - Component One: Scaling up shovel ready work - Program 1: Boots on the ground - Land restoration and management - Program 2: Fins in the water – Coral to coast reef resilience - Component Two: Innovative recovery leading to long-term resilience - Program 3: Igniting the Smart Green Capital of Australia The Tropical North Queensland region has a distinct opportunity to rebuild its economy to become stronger and more resilient than it was prior to COVID-19.
