In response to the request for further information, the Cairns Regional Council (CRC) put forward a revised management plan.  That revised plan is required to have public consultation, and CRC must consider community concerns and address them before submitting this revised plan to the federal enviornment department.

To be clear, it is important in your submission to explicitly ask CRC to address concerns or issues you can see in the plan. CRC must demonstrate to the department how they have addressed these concerns.

CAFNEC has been working with the Cairns community to ensure the conservation of SFF for decades. There is a distinct possibility that dispersal in the CBD could result in a negative outcome for both our community and the bats and result in unsustainable costs to ratepayers. Furthermore, Council cannot control where the SFF will relocate to after dispersal and has not properly analysed the risk associated with the SFF roosting elsewhere.

We are asking you to make a submission on Cairns Regional Council’s Relocation Management Plan to relocate approximately 5000 Spectacled Flying Foxes from the Cairns Library roost. The more submissions the better.

URGENT: You may have seen hundreds of flying foxes dying as a result of the record-breaking temperatures in Cairns this week. Carers are working around the clock. Sound familiar? It is. We were in this same situation one year ago losing a majority of pups from the Cairns CBD camp from other stressors.

We are living in a changing climate. Aside from supporting carers, we can’t press pause on the heat right now but what we can do is push our politicians to be making better decisions for these creatures.

On the 22nd of April, the Bat Festival was held at the Salt House Garden. It was an event organised by the Cairns Regional Council, Australasian Bat Society and CAFNEC.

Hundreds of people came along for live music, cocktails, microbat detecting, kids crafts, educational talks, flying fox flyout interpretive talks, a great raffle, BBQ, Zoo To You and more!

The outcomes of a pre-election survey of local candidates by CAFNEC (the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre) has shown major differences between the candidates and their parties on key environment issues. CAFNEC has summarised these differences in an Environment Report Card.

Results showed a range of good to poor environmental responses from the Katter Australia Party (KAP) and the Australian Labor Party (ALP), with unsurprisingly consistent environmental protection policies from the Greens. No response was received from the Palmer United Party (PUP) and a lack of published environmental policy excluded them from being rated on the report card. Disappointingly there was also no response from any of the Liberal National Party (LNP) candidates. However the LNP’s published policies enabled a rating on issues for the report card.

BACKGROUND

Questions on the survey focussed on protection of the Great Barrier Reef, policies on renewable energy and energy efficiency, coal seam gas mining in the region, future water sources and protection of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and Cape York biodiversity values. Candidate policy on spectacled flying foxes in the Cairns CBD was also sought.
