Salt Marsh Assessment in Tidal WetlandsInterested in learning about salt marshes?
Do you like Mangroves? Then you’ll love salt marshes! Come along as we explore our local tidal wetlands and document their current condition as citizen scientists. There is no training or experience required, it’s very easy to learn and do!
What is a salt marsh?
A salt marsh or saltmarsh, also known as a coastal salt marsh or a tidal marsh, is a coastal ecosystem in the upper coastal intertidal zone between land and open saltwater or brackish water that is regularly flooded by the tides.
What are we doing?
The Rapid Saltmarsh Assessment Tool is a new method designed to evaluate saltmarsh key
values and threats to inform prioritisation of on-ground management action to protect
saltmarsh habitat. Citizen-scientists subjectively score observed issues and habitat values
within a specified saltmarsh area and learn about saltmarsh habitat values and vulnerability.
Saltmarsh Monitoring
Join us for a morning of citizen science as we explore our tidal wetlands!
Monitoring Dates and Locations:
June 11th: Machans Beach
Yet another change! The Yorkeys Knob site is still inaccessible so we are going to monitor a site at Machans Beach! We will meet at the corner of Atkinson Street and Christensen Street in Machans Beach at 8 am!
What to bring: Water, snacks, appropriate sun protection, and walking shoes for muddy areas.
